How we got here.

As a young boy, Mike Lagesten sat on a stool in his grandad’s shop for hours, watching him manipulate blocks of wood into a masterpiece.  The smell of sawdust in the air from a pull saw ripping through the grain, the sound of a surgical-sharp chisel peeling away thin shavings; a passion was ignited that would last a lifetime.
Traditional woodcraft stayed with Mike as a hobby as he worked his way through a fifteen-year career with a big box giant, a three-year stint as an Operations Manager for an organics recycling facility, followed by another role as an Operations Manager for a potable water delivery company.  Those roles offered invaluable experience in business management and operation, but still weren’t satisfying his need to create.

The birth of his second daughter during a global pandemic was the catalyst Mike had been waiting for and it was time to shift focus and start taking woodcraft more seriously again.

There was only one problem; creating a brand that embodied Mike and the culmination of experiences that made him into the craftsman he had become.  While doing some family history research, Mike discovered a story that inspired emotion:
Mike’s grandfather, Hans, grew up in Sweden and endured some challenging times.  Eventually, he decided to leave his humble beginnings and move to Canada.  To do so, he needed a new surname to go with his new life.  After some deliberation, Hans settled on the name Lägesten, which loosely translates to Läge (layers/walls) and Sten (stone).  The name was meant to represent strength, resilience, and a desire to surge on toward his dreams.

Stone Wall Woodcraft was born.

After creating the brand in early 2020, Mike dedicated all his free time to honing his craft and reinforcing the techniques he has been practicing his whole life.
Stone Wall Woodcraft became a business in early 2022, and it has been surging ahead full steam ever since.  Just like Grandpa Hans.
